On September 1, 2024, amendments to the current Beekeeping Law will come into force. The new document (No. 556-FZ) was signed on November 27, 2023. The amendments were made in order to clear the market of honey and beekeeping products from counterfeit products.
According to the amendments, a new article “Ensuring the quality and safety of beekeeping products” has been added to the current legislation, which states: “Ensuring the quality and safety of beekeeping products is carried out in accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation and acts constituting the law of the Eurasian Economic Union.”
Also, an amendment is being made according to which the products of bee activity are determined not only by the All-Russian Classifier of Products, but also by technical regulations and standardization documents.
One of the authors of the document, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Agricultural and Food Policy and Environmental Management, Sergei Mitin commented on the adopted amendments:
“The law is very important and necessary; both honey consumers and farmers themselves are waiting for these changes. It's no secret that honey is an important part of the diet, a medicine, a component of cosmetics and a basis for preparing food. Let me remind you that the share of counterfeit beekeeping products on the market in certain regions reaches 70%. By producing low-quality, essentially fake honey, unscrupulous producers not only deceive consumers of this popular product in our country, but also gain a clear competitive advantage in the market. The adopted law will clear the market of such producers and improve the quality of honey on the shelves of our stores.”
